A Gospel Response to Tolerance

DATE: April 11, 2021

Summary: The concept of tolerance has been twisted and manipulated by our culture. What the Bible teaches us about tolerance will have a greater impact on the eternal relationship we and others have with God than our temporary relationship with others.

INTRO

Ground-rules for the next 3 weeks

  • Ground-rule #1: God’s Word leads lifestyle
  • Ground-rule #2: God’s Word leverages individuals

THE STORY

JOHN 4:1-42

Tolerance is how one responds to disagreement in opinions, lifestyle, beliefs, or differences

Biblical tolerance is the act of enduring or acknowledging different responses to the Gospel

RESPONDING WITH TOLERANCE TO OUTSIDERS – TOLERANCE WITH GRACE

2 types of “Outsiders”

  • Naïve – they don’t know or understand the Gospel
  • Foolish – they know and understand, but reject the Gospel

Don’t JUDGE them

Be WISE and GRACIOUS with them

Help them see that there is a BETTER WAY to LIVE

  • Colossians 4:5-6
  • 2 Timothy 2:22-26

RESPONDING WITH TOLERANCE TO INSIDERS – TOLERANCE WITH ACCOUNTABILITY

2 types of “Insiders”

  • Leaders – Christians who lead in a ministry or specific role in the local church (Elders/Pastors, Deacons, Directors/Ministers, & their spouses)
  • Disciples – People who have made a public profession of faith (through baptism, confession, and/or communion)

Treat them like FAMILY

Focus on RESTORATION, don’t fall to TEMPTATION

Help them see that there is a BETTER WAY to LIVE

  • James 5:19-20
  • Galatians 6:1-2

No matter which group we are “tolerating”, as Christians, we must do everything we can, short of sin, to show and speak the message of the Gospel… THERE IS A BETTER WAY TO LIVE

What we tolerate and what we don’t tolerate is determined by God’s Word and influence by the message of the Gospel’s impact on us, personally

BIG IDEA

We only do what we can do best – give people the Gospel…

And we let God do what only He can do best – change people’s hearts
